Saved for the Nation

Before

After
The greenhouse is saved, the temperature is rising, we have a thaw.
Yesterday afternoon Mr FF after various inspired but impractical engineering solutions decided that we should attempt to remove some of the snow from the roof above the greenhouse to lighten the load that might come down on the glass. He went up the ladder knocking the snow gently onto the greenhouse roof where it slid down and I shifted it away from the glass sides to relieve the pressure. Although the gutters above the greenhouse had by this time completely broken away the build up of ice was so thick that it stayed in place for a while then suddenly broke sliding down the glass without damage but slap bang into my leg knocking me over. I wasn't hurt badly though a swelling about the size of a mango quickly appeared and today I have spectacular bruising and some soreness. These are the offending ice slabs and broken gutter.

Today we have about 3.5 degrees above freezing and dripping everywhere, especially around the 30% of the house that is without guttersIce is overhanging the front door, the gutter has gone but the leaf debris that was in there is still frozen to the ice and I have propped the gutter up to catch some of the drips. Mr FF is now worried that since we haven't taken snow off the double storey section of the house, for obvious reasons, when that comes down it might demolish his satellite dish taking away his weekend football watching.
This afternoon we look like this, much better with more snow taken off the roof so I'm off to elevate my sore leg, browse the seed catalogues knowing I have somewhere to sow them and cast on another sock

  2. Ouch! Hope your leg feels better soon. I'm so glad that you've managed to save the greenhouse. Do give Rose's Wristwarmers another go. I have big hands (I'm really tall, so I am in proportion!) and they fit me really well knitted in the Debbie Bliss DK Cashmerino. I can see them getting a lot of wear, and also being good as presents!

  3. Oh dear! Glad to hear you weren't too badly injured. Lots of leg elevation and knitting required to bring about healing! Enjoy the weekend, in the knowledge that the snow is now thawing. Ros

  5. Now losing the satellite dish and the football would be a real disaster! Glad that the greenhouse is safe.

Our roof man talked about some sort of snow guard that could be attached to the gutter to protect our conservatory, but husband decided that we didn't need it.It might be an idea for your gutters.

  6. I'm so glad that things are no worse!! Other than your poor leg of course. It would have been just awful if the greenhouse had taken a hit and it's wonderful news that it's OK!!
It looks funny to see the leaf debris still hanging up there but if your thaw continues, it will go soon!

  8. Hope your leg gets better soon, and that knock doesn't have any lassting effects!

I hate seeing thawing snow, I wish it would all disappear in a flash, without dripping, sliding and generally making a horrid great slushy grey mess!

  14. Hope the bruising and soreness is lessening. With the rise in temperature the snow has almost vanished here. Now everything looks, erm, brown.

  16. Ah, so you think I have too much ribbon do you?? Is there such a thing as "too much" may I ask! People in glass houses, etc, etc!!! And talking of glass houses, glad yours has come through intact! Yikes, sorry about the accident though, good thing it wasn't any worse, would have like to see how that looked on an insurance claim!!
