Like a Rhinestone Cowboy

It could be the onset of spring but I'm definitely going through a strange phase at the moment. Still knitting and gardening of course but I'm also doing a lot of cowboy fantasising. I love cowboy films, I spent a lot of my childhood watching John Wayne etc and reenacting shoot out scenes with my brother and his friends. Growing up on a farm it was easy for us to create the wild west, an old hen hut for our shack, straw bales, cows to rustle of course, we rode round on our bikes wearing bandannas and stetsons. I remember once making myself with string a set of reins to steer my bike though that really only worked when riding in a straight line. I don't actually like horses and was very reluctant to ride my cousins pony even for the sake of reality.I also love those cowboy/country and western songs and have been listening almost none stop to Glen Campbell recently. I truly love his voice, Wichita Lineman, By the Time I get to Phoenix, this morning I was singing along with him over breakfast - such are the dreams of the everyday housewife. So it was no big surprise for me to find myself lusting after a pair of bright pink cowboy boots the other day. Sadly, Glen now 75 was diagnosed last year with Alzheimer's, there is a very beautiful video here if you have the time to look. “I don’t pay any attention to it,” he said. “It’s like when the devil comes knocking on your door. Don’t pay any attention to it.”
Enjoy your weekend and your fantasies, yeehaw.

  1. You sound a lot like me, I was always pretending to be the Lone Ranger or Roy Rogers when I was a child, though I am, in truth, petrified of horses. I adored Johnny Cash and Glen Campbell so you can imagine how sad I was when I heard of Glen's illness. He has a marvellous attitude to it I think. Thanks for sharing the link, it was well worth watching.

  2. I knew we were kindred spirits. Roy and Gene and all the old guys were my heroes. When LT starts annoying me I tell him to watch out, as soon as I find a cowboy who measures up to my man Roy, LT is is on notice! ha! Enjoy your cowboy fantasies...it's such a good thing!!

  3. Such a pity about Glen Campbell, but I wonder how much the booze and drugs, when he was younger, have contributed to his decline.

  5. Those pink boots certainly are something else! But I think you'd need to go the whole hog and get yourself a pink fringed jacket (maybe with some added rhinestones?!) and a pink stetson to complete the look satisfactorily! A new pair of flip flops might be cheaper!!

  6. I didn't know that about Glen...my mother listened to him a lot back then. As kids my siblings and I would play injuns and cowboys while riding around on our stick ponies. So glad I wasn't born in the age of Wii.

  7. As my mum used to say, if you really want them, buy them. (I have a pair of brown cowboy boots that I bought years ago in the US. They've never been worn!)

  8. LOL when my brother and I were kids in the '70s growing up in small-town, america, we thought Glen was the epitome of "cheesy country singer". now as an adult, i can appreciate his talent. he did truly have a lovely voice. it was just those songs.....

  9. I think quite possibly that this is one fantasy that I would have kept under wraps!! My Mam was a huge fan of c&w and the first five years of my life before I went off to school, completely burnt me out with this genre for my entire life. I'd run a mile if you started single Rhinestone Cowboy and don't get me started on Jim Reeves!!

    Hugs

  10. I smiled when I read the bit about using string to make yourself a pair of reins for your bike. I could picture you "riding your steed" in my mind's eye! I didn't know Glen Campbell has Alzheimer's.......... how sad :O(
