Me the snow and the sofa

We had so much more snow yesterday that central Scotland came to a complete standstill with motorways gridlocked, public transport cancelled and schools closed. This afternoon more than 24 hours later there are still over 1000 vehicles in the Strathclyde (our) region trapped in the snow. So I'm grateful that Mr FF and I are home and safe even though our central heating boiler broke down yesterday and its minus 10 outside. The boiler repair man is on his way, the stove is lit and I am wearing three layers, the middle one of which is cashmere so I'm fine though getting out from under the duvet this morning was a challenge with ice on the inside of our double glazed windows.
I've continued to keep the drive clear mainly because I love clearing the snow, and not for the benefit of Mr FF who is banned from going out. He was toying with the idea of a meeting in Glasgow tonight but someone more sensible has cancelled it. Besides though our drive is clear the road out of our little development looks like this.
Once I've cleared the snow, topped up the bird feeders and brought in more fuel I've been welded to the sofa with this beside me
I'm knitting a little fair isle cardy from Debbie Bliss's Family Knits. I'm not totally enamoured with the Patons Diploma Gold 4 ply I selected, the strands have a bad habit of welding themselves together as I twist them rather like mohair which doesn't make for smooth knitting. All my Christmas sock and glove orders are finished so the pressure is off, I just need to get out and deliver them when I can prise myself away from the stove.
PS at 21.34. The lovely boiler man came, said we needed a new part but managed to get the old part working for now. The house is warm, the conservatory is back above freezing, I am reduced to 2 jumpers, good boiler man.

  3. Your fairisle is gorgeous, such lovely colours. We had loads of snow in Glasgow too, and I am enjoying the company of my sofa, surrounded by a selection of nice wool and a cup of tea!; it's the safest and cosiest place to be in this kind of weather.Keep warm, hope the boiler gets fixed as soon as possible.

  5. Gorgeous colours for the cardy. I am useless and putting colours together!

A friend of mine flew to Glasgow to see her father (we're Canadian) and it took her two days to get a bus to travel three miles to his house from the airport! She said she's never seen such chaos!

We get a lot of snow but for some reason seem better equipped to handle it. I think our roads are wider and straighter too. Not anywhere near as pretty but practical.

  6. Your colourwork is so neat! Hope the boiler gets mended soon. A perfect excuse to buy more luxury yarns I think! You never know when you might need another layer of cashmere!

  7. I hope you keep warm and cozy during the bad weather! I just love it when you include pics of your current projects. It must be a grand feeling to complete a project as lovely as the one you've shown us! It almost makes me want to knit again...er...well, maybe not! But I truly enjoy knitting vicariously via your blog!!

  8. The cold is perishing here, I can only imagine how it must be where you are, we live very near the river Wye and it has completely frozen. Keep that man at home, I say.............tie him down if you have to, lol.

Your knitting conjures up images of my nan knitting fairisle cardi's for us when we were children............special ones were knitted at Christmas with reindeers or snowmen worked into the patterns.
Hope your boiler's sorted out soon,
    keep warm, florrie x

  10. Hope you manage to stay warm over there! Though up in the North here, we think that at some point Britain should perhaps wake up and realise what latitude they are on and prepare for the fact that it does snow almost every winter.. :op

  12. I recently told my dad (in Hawaii) that it took me 7 years to finally become adjusted to Lake Como's winters - 7 years! But now after hearing the international weather reports on tv and then reading an actual account from you, I know that it would take me another 7, at least, to become accustomed to ice on the inside of windows. Oh my!

  13. Just catching up with your blog. Can't believe how much snow you have had; nor how much knitting you have done. Wonderful colours and patterns. We had 5 inches of snow in one day on the island - a record. I don't do snow; nor do I do knitting so perhaps Scotland not the place for me. Keep warm.
